On March 26, 2009, the sixth and final module of AHRMA’s pilot volunteer leadership development program, “Stepping Stones to Enhanced Leadership” was presented at the Austin Country Club by Alice Dendinger, SPHR, Human Resource Consultant, Coach, and Certified Mediator with Alice Dendinger Alliance Group. The module was entitled, “Leadership” and the purpose of the workshop was to bring together concepts that the participants had been learning for the past several months. In addition, they were able to walk away with a plan of action that focused on the concept and importance of Strategic Thinking, Change Leadership and Trust Building.
Strategic Thinking:
We have heard for years the need to “have a seat at the table.” In reality, the seat is there – just pull it out and sit down. So, now that you are sitting at the table, how do you contribute in a way that builds your credibility as an HR Leader? How do you ensure that when you speak, others will listen and respond? These and other topics were covered during this segment of the workshop
Change Leadership:
Being an effective Change Leader involves the knowledge and regular use of a variety of skills. A change leader will anticipate changes based on current trends within the industry. What is the core difference between a Change Leader and a Change Manager and how do you choose to be a Change Leader where some of the topics presented.
Trust Building:
Lack of trust in HR and management can impact the bottom line directly and indirectly. Without employees’ trust, every great HR initiative or organizational project is destined for second guessing and unnecessary scrutiny. Participants were able to discover how you can increase your personal credibility and firmly establish trust in your HR Department therefore resulting in greater organizational trust. What are the factors that contribute to high trust? During this portion of the program, attendees obtained several tools to increase organizational and personal trust.
Highlights of the responses from the online survey are summarized below:
Presenter:
• Alice was excellent! She engaged the attendees which made the information apply on a personal level. She was thorough and measured.
• As always, it is truly amazing to hear Alice present. She is so dynamic, knowledgeable, and impressive.
• Alice makes the interactive workshop a wonderful learning experience – with a little humor thrown in!
Content/Materials:
• The content of this module was precisely what HR leaders need to know.
• There was a lot of information to cover – Alice kept the pace brisk yet unhurried.
• I was able to take tools away for me and my organization.
Effectiveness:
• Alice did a great job of making the information relevant to various perspectives, which was tough given that our group is a mixture of independent consultants, strategic HR leaders, generalists, and managers.
• Very effective – my complete attention was devoted to Alice’s presentation.
• Another outstanding program! THANK YOU, ALICE!
Overall Comments:
• Excellent delivery and culmination for the program.
• Awesome!!! It would be interesting to see where this group ‘grows’ to over the next year or two. I am sure that there will be a lasting impact on them.
• While all of the modules have been very informative and interactive, this module had the most impact on me. I just can’t rave enough about how powerful this module has been.
Our appreciation to Alice Dendinger for “crowning” the capstone module of AHRMA’s leadership development program, “Stepping Stones.” The raves awarded to Alice are testament to the lasting impact this workshop will have on the participants.
Plans are now underway to launch the second series of the volunteer leadership development program later this year. If you would like additional information regarding “Stepping Stones to Enhanced Leadership,” please contact Ramona Rohrer at rorohrer@att.net.
